Congratulations to Oak Harbor High School Jazz Ensemble on a superior rating at this week's SJMEA Jazz Festival!

Each year the San Juan Music Educators Association brings together Jazz Bands and Jazz Choirs from the Whatcom, Skagit, San Juan, and Island County Schools. The festival provides an opportunity for feedback from some of the areas most respected jazz performers and educators.

Thank you to our community partners, volunteers, and families who attended this week's Family Resource Night focused on prevention and education. The event was led by our student assistance professionals from Oak Harbor High School, North Whidbey Middle School, and Oak Harbor Intermediate School, in collaboration with the Oak Harbor Youth Coalition .

Oak Harbor Public Schools partners with NWESD 189 to provide prevention and intervention programs to increase knowledge and awareness of the nature and extent of alcohol and other drug use, abuse, and addiction.
 

Autism Community Connections Summit

Oak Harbor Public Schools is partnering with Autism Partnership of Island County (APIC) on April 18 for a free, one-day community event bringing together families, caregivers, professionals, and several local organizations for connection, resources, and support.

Exceptional Academy's Susan Armstrong will be one of the guest speakers. The event will also include resource booths from local and regional providers, and opportunities to ask questions. Lunch is provided. Please register to attend.

North Whidbey Middle School Family and Consumer Science students hosted the 9th Annual Cupcake Wars today! The event is coordinated by teacher Brianna Thompson. Students work as a group to select and execute a cupcake recipe that they bake from scratch and decorate. They then present their cupcakes to guest judges from the community, schools, and district office throughout the day. Judges rate each team on taste of the cake and frosting, and the overall design/presentation. 

During 6th Period, a table full of guest judges rated Kitchen One's "Coraline" cupcakes as the best tasting, overall. It featured a chocolate cupcake with strawberry filling and salted caramel cream cheese frosting. Thank you to all of the students, Ms. Thompson, and our community of judges for participating!

Oak Harbor High School's Flight Club recently went to Seattle for the Epic STEM Around the Pole challenge, which focused on building model planes with the shortest takeoff time. Students received a guided tour at The Museum of Flight before the competition.

Joshua Niewinski and Jeremiah Statler competed under the team name "Mark Of The IV." They achieved a takeoff time of 1.13 seconds, securing first place.

Speaking of flying, the FAA Commercial Drone Pilot Training Course is a new class introduced this year at Oak Harbor High School. It allows students to prepare for real-world drone flying operations while working toward their FAA Part 107 Certification, which is essential for anyone seeking to operate drones commercially in the United States.

OHHS Students Participate in Regional Skills USA Competitions

Oak Harbor High School proudly hosted the Regional Visual Arts Competition for SkillsUSA on January 29, bringing together talented students from across the region to showcase their creative abilities.

In the Photography category, Matthew Selsor ‘26 won first place, Anneliese Erskine ‘26 secured second place, and Kady McCrae ‘27 won third place.

In the Advertising Design category, Antoinette Scherer ‘27 took first place and Shane Weinkauf ‘27 earned second place.

In the Video Production competition, the dynamic duo of Katherine Sheppard ‘26 and Jacob Sheppard ‘28 earned first place.

Students also performed exceptionally well in the SkillsUSA automotive competitions. Ben Jones '26 earned 7th place in automotive maintenance and light repair, while Layla Muro '26 secured 3rd place in motorcycles. Senior Owen Best placed first in the diesel equipment technology competition and will advance to state level competition.

Matt Klope, a Wildlife Biologist and the owner of Whidbey Taxidermy, visited Oak Harbor Intermediate teacher Sarah Child's 5th grade class this week.

"He was amazing!" says Childs. "He gave clear directions and has a great sense of humor. He talked about the different mammals that live here on the island."
